After a couple of weeks of head-scratching and hair-tearing, the songs for my brother’s wedding are done.

Just to get you ‘in the story’, here’s some background:

My brother YuJin’s wedding is next month. He’s been dating my sis-in-law Joanne since they were 15. He’s 31 now - do the math. Now that’s a love story, marrying your high-school sweetheart.

I told him I’d write a song for him and Joanne to sing at the wedding, and I’ll also play a song of my own composition. The one for the bride and groom is called ‘Till The End’, with lyrics by the YuJin himself. The second one (the one I was having a whole lot of trouble with) is called ‘When We Were Boys’.

It’s hard writing a song for your brother’s wedding. Especially if he’s your only brother.

Think about it, you want to say it all; you want it to be funny, nostalgic, happy, retrospective, introspective and un-cheesy, all at the same time. I guess you could write a Michael-Learns-To-Rock-ish type song, but in my books, that’s a total groan inducer for me.

So I did something a little off center. At least I think it is. I wonder what he’ll think of it. Or what Jo will think of it.

I like it though.

I’ll post it up closer to the wedding - it’s only about 3 weeks away!

The talented Hoong Bee and I scored the music for the movie, and judging from early reviews, It’s looking like people are liking it.

Here’s an excerpt from a recent review:

“It helps that the music was a top-rate arrangement. I felt that it really captures the feel of the scenes rather well. The music by Yuri Wong and Hoong Bee Lim is subtle, using low, soft riffs that adds a little sinister feel to the scenes. It’s very Chinese/unique/oriental in nature, which fits in nicely with the whole feel of the film.” (Thoughts On Films)”

Man! That review made my day!!

Anyhow, you can purchase the DVD at Indieflix or watch it for free this month at the Portable Film Festival

Oh, and as a bonus to you guys, I’m putting the closing theme music for Emperor for download/streaming in the Music Player on the right - Enjoy!

A lesson I learnt today from talking with one of the must successful insane people I know.

What are you insanely passionate about? What makes you stay up late, forget meals, disregard events to spend your time on?

I remember when I was a kid I used to build Rube Goldbergs. I’d spend hours on the things, making sure the last thing would fall and trigger that textbook to slide down the cardboard slope at the right angle, hitting the marble and finally turning the page. I’d forget there were TV shows, meals, even people. I was lost in my own world.

Then I grew up, and getting lost became a bad thing. You were told to be normal, not insane. Fit in. Grow up. All that crap.

I love music, but maybe I haven’t been as insane about it as I should. I want to be insane again.

I will be insane again.

Ironically, what seems to be a guiding thought for this segment of my life is this quotation by Claude Debussy:

“There is no theory. You have only to listen. Pleasure is the law. I love music passionately. And because l love it, I try to free it from barren traditions that stifle it. It is a free art gushing forth, an open-air art boundless as the elements, the wind, the sky, the sea. It must never be shut in and become an academic art.”

Well said, Claude. Wish me luck.
