Fear

July 24th, 2007 by yuri

I was having a conversation with Adrian last night, and he mentioned this:
“fear-based decisions almost always screws someone over.”

I thought about what he said, and I really think it’s true. One should never make decisions based on fear. Our context of discussion last night was on the topic of management, specifically business management, but I think it applies to just about everything. Too many people, when faced with making a difficult decision, worry about what they might lose rather than look at what everyone has to gain. They hold the mentality of scarcity - that there’s a finite amount of what’s good (money, friends, love, etc.) and that the more they share, the less they will have for themselves.

I’ve been guilty of fear-based decisions myself. I’ve made them in past relationships. You may have made them too. I”ll try not to anymore. You should too.

Don’t make a decision because you’re afraid of something, make a decision because it’s what you want. Feel the fear and go for it.

From a performance at No Black Tie recently. Pretty much didn’t plan to play it on piano, but I thought, what the heck. Hope you like it.

Run, Rainforest, Run!

July 10th, 2007 by yuri

The Rainforest World Music Festival in Sarawak begins this Friday. I cannot wait.

All-expense paid  (it’s a company trip!), great company, excellent music, a general lack of inhibition - what more could I ask for?

We leave on Thursday morning. Watch out, Kuching!

Will post pics up when I get back. In the meantime, here’s one of last year’s:

How You Can Help Someone Else With My Money

July 1st, 2007 by yuri

I’ve a bag of coins that grows every day. That’s because I don’t use coins. Each time I get home with coins, I take them out of my pocket (I don’t use a wallet that holds coins) and dump them into a cup. When that cup floweth over, I dump the contents into the bag.

The bag is getting heavy.

Once, I took the bag and went to the city and gave all the money to the first ‘person-in-need’ I saw. We’re not talking just 1 and 5-sen coins here. Anything from 50 sen to 20 to 5 were in there. There must’ve been a quite a bit of money in it; it was heavy. I think it helped.

This second bag is definitely heavier than that one. And it’s growing every day.

I’d like you to participate in this.

All you have to do is as simple as this:
Get more people involved. No money needed. Just goodwill and a willingness to say ‘this is good, and I want to be a part of it somehow’. Get a friend, or two, or ten, and get them to come over to this website and post a comment anywhere, saying ‘I’m IN!’ (or anything to that effect). Once the comments reach a 100 (I’ll update the count as time goes by), I’ll give however much money that the bag has grown into to someone in need. All that’s needed is your goodwill, which is free :)

It may not be a huge deal; it’s not going to save the world. But it’s a step towards making it a better place.

Thanks for sharing.

Edit: (5th July 2007 12:36am): Count is now 34, more than 1/3 way there. Cool!

Edit: (3rd July 2007 1:30am): the count now stands at 25, which is quicker than I thought. Thanks fellas!

Edit: (9th July 2007 8:30pm): count is about 40, and I don’t think it’s gonna hit 100, so I’m just gonna do it with Brian soon. Will update when it’s done!

ALSO, I’ve thought up of something else.

I’d like you, those who’ve so kindly said ‘I’m in’ on this, to start your own money bag, and empty it once it’s full to anything you believe in that’ll make the world a better place. Anything at all. It’s a simple way to make a difference.
